It takes some imagination to figure the initial configuration of the Sergeant gate! On old photographs,
we can see this gate is as part of the houses, forming with their outer facade complements to
the ramparts. The attached photomontage gives an idea of this configuration. Militarily speaking,
this configuration was a weak point so a second door was built on the access way ahead, creating an
additional difficulty for the assailants
This configuration is called a barbican.
