Cairanne Patrimony Saint Geniès Chapel, XI-XIIth century |
The saint Geniès Chapel is the oldest religious building in Cairanne. Beautiful example of romanic
architecture in Provence, it consists of a vaulted half-dome apse, slighty elevated in relation to
the nave. The partition arc between the apse and the nave is set on stone pillars. A courtyard was
built at an unknown date. Located nearby the intersection of the roads going from Carpentras to
Tulette and from Carpentras to Sainte Cécile, it is dedicated to Saint Geniès, martyred in Arles
in the IIIth century, who was the protector of cradle cup babies. At the XVIIIth century, a silver
shrine,
now gone, sheltered a Saint Geniès relic. In the XIXth century when the cemetery was being built,
merovingian graves were discovered. In 2017 the chapel was restored with a new pinnacle.
