Water in Cairanne's old village

For a long time the supply of drinking water in Cairanne has been a major problem. The village sits on top of a hill with no fountain for its 800 inhabitants. There is however a water pouch down at 8 meters below and several houses have a well. But it is not a drinkable water and one must go down to a fresh spring water, located at the foot of the hill. In 1900 they decide to dig a 40 meters deep well which is still here behind you. Mostly women are in charge of drawing water out of the well with a bucket hanging on a rope. Finally in 1937 an electrical pump is set up. It feeds a tank located under the dungeon and this fountain built against the rempart. At last everyone can easily get some water but it has to be used sparingly. This fountain stands as a testimony of the harshness of life in those days. Running water will be provided in 1952. Too late! the village was already deserted and in ruins.
