The Barbican


The Barbican means an advanced fortification that in Cairanne forcing the assailants to cross the door in front of you. Then to move on to the uncovered bannister between the present gate and a second gate which allows people to bomb from the ramparts. The second gate, called ‘Sergeant Gate’, is staggered and does not allow the use of a ram, complicating the task of the assailants. The ramparts are demolished to open the road after the French Revolution in 1789.
